Living in the second largest city in Italy can definitely add up, but there are tons of free things to experience and free things to do in Milan during your internship or visit.
In January 1998, in the summer before my last semester of my BA degree in Political Science and Science and Technology Studies at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, I did a 3-month internship at the United Nations in Jakarta, Indonesia. Barcelona, Spain is a vibrant metropolis filled with colorful architecture, sandy beaches, a thriving nightlife, and plenty of places to sample delicious Catalan food. I’ve been meaning to check out the coffee shop scene here, because although it is not as big of a thing to frequent them and hang out there as it is in the States, Florence has a number of bookshop/library/cafe/weplaymusicatnight kinds of spots. Naturally I’m intrigued, as I like books, music, and coffee. So before embarking on my kitchen journey, I went to visit Le Cita’, a sweet little shop right over the bridge. I didn’t bother to check upstairs, where I later discovered there are couches and other more comfortable seating, but I spent a few really lovely hours reading and sipping coffee and being surrounded by a public whose interests were the same.
Appropriately nicknamed the City That Doesn’t Sleep (because there's too much to do!), NYC is constantly abuzz with festivals, markets, shopping, nightlife, and plenty of really unique people to meet. No matter if you decide to spend a few days or a few months interning in New York City, there is no limit to all of the great places you can discover and many of them completely free!

Skimming through the archives of one of my go-to news sites, PolicyMic, I was aghast to come across an article that goes against everything I believe in: 5 Reasons College Students Should Not Study Abroad. At first glance, I assumed that this was a pressure point piece, being controversial as a way to assure a rush of comments and readers.
After scrolling down to the comments, my belief about how great travel is was affirmed by the 50+ responses from outraged wanderlusters like myself, who all shared my opinion that living abroad is the experience of a lifetime.
