Tips and Tales From Around the Globe

Every summer, Washington D.C. becomes the mecca for internships for those interested in politics, law, and non-profits. It is one of the most powerful cities in the world and is full of opportunities for those who can take the heat and are eager to learn.

1. Gain more professional experience while traveling

The reason why I want to have an internship abroad is to gain more professional experience, while being able to travel at the same time. I am currently about to finish my two year degree and plan to transfer to a university next fall. I felt that having an internship this summer would allow me to gain more experience in the field I am most interested in, which is Event Planning. So, by next fall I will have a better understanding of which path I want to head towards. I’ve always wanted to travel and knew that one day I would be able to. Before I knew about interning abroad, I was planning to study abroad for a semester. However, after I learned more about Global Experiences and the different programs they offer, I have decided that interning abroad would be a more beneficial experience for me. Having an internship abroad will allow me to develop more professional skills in a work environment that is different from what I am used to, while being able to experience the country and its culture.

Over the past few years, we’ve had many different family members that have interned aboard together including over 5 different sets of twins. We know all the great reasons why someone should intern abroad, but what are the benefits of doing an internship with your twin or sibling? We asked a few of our alumni who interned aboard with a family member to discuss the benefits and challenges of interning abroad with a brother or sister.

In January 1998, in the summer before my last semester of my BA degree in Political Science and Science and Technology Studies at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, I did a 3-month internship at the United Nations in Jakarta, Indonesia. It was experience that changed my life in so many ways and set me on a path that has lead me to a place I could never have expected.

An internship abroad is a large investment into your time, your money, and your future. We’ve already told you about all the great benefits of doing an international internship, but we haven’t we discussed the great perks of planning ahead to travel abroad.

Skimming through the archives of one of my go-to news sites, PolicyMic, I was aghast to come across an article that goes against everything I believe in: 5 Reasons College Students Should Not Study Abroad. At first glance, I assumed that this was a pressure point piece, being controversial as a way to assure a rush of comments and readers.

After scrolling down to the comments, my belief about how great travel is was affirmed by the 50+ responses  from outraged wanderlusters like myself, who all shared my opinion that living abroad is the experience of a lifetime.
