Struggling to do "more" for your International students with few resources at your disposal?

International students are increasingly seeking intensive internship and work related opportunities falling under their legal OPT or CPT status. However finding appropriate opportunities can fall anywhere between faculty advisors, career centers, or more typically... with the ISSS office... who are continually asked to do "more" with fewer and fewer resources and time. Accountability to the institution and the student makes finding an easy and safe solution a must.

Global Experiences provides an easy solution to university advisors responsible for providing these opportunities to their students. For more than 16 years, Global Experiences has been focused exclusively on placing students in international internships, including a high number of international students being placed in the USA.

Challenges and Questions to Consider

  • Who is responsible for sourcing quality experiences?
  • Who is helping each individual identify the experience best suited for them?
  • Who helps prepare each student with resume, interviewing, and other needs required to secure a placement?
  • Who ensures whether the experience is successful?  If not, what alternatives are available?
  • What if it doesn’t work out, putting the visa/or limited OPT / CPT time in jeopardy?
  • What if the employer turns out to be questionable or the intern is doing questionable work?
  • Who is monitoring and providing supervision through the experience?
  • What about issues surrounding accountability and duty of care responsibilities?
  • Is this a reflection of the individual university’s responsibility and will it hurt future recruitment?

How it works for your students

While we work individually with each of our university partners, we've put together a video that explains a bit more in general how "GE does what we do".  Global Experiences has worked with OPT and CPT students, as well as navigating visa processes for F1 students seeking an internship placements in the US and abroad. Our traditional partnerships have been with with advisors in Education Abroad and Study Abroad but realize that International Programs and Career Services are the "first stop" for international students looking for domestic internship opportunities.

What's the student process

While GE can look to tailor our processes to the betterment of the partnership, we’ve learned the most success comes from the in-country partner identifying and marketing to relevant audiences then encouraging students to enroll through either the GE application or the partners. GE will always interview the student prior to final confirmation of the acceptance and then the student will follow through the rest of GE’s career readiness program culminating in a custom internship placement.

After requirements are checked and the student is accepted we consider them Enrolled.  They have officially decided to join the Global Experience program and take on the challenge and thrill of living and becoming an intern abroad in a new city!

Students will have a Skype or phone interview with employers we currently have or one that we source specific to the student.  Once the employer has extended an offer we'll work with the student/your office to ensure proper visa documentation, orientation information, housing, and most importantly Career Development.
