Tips and Tales From Around the Globe

Kaylee is a student at Towson University majoring in Graphic Design. This summer she travelled for the first time outside of the US and flew across the pond for an internship in London.

During her time abroad she watched Harry Potter and The Cursed Child live in the theatre (and met the cast!), went to Wimbledon (and met the winners of the men’s wheelchair doubles), and visited Stonehenge, Bath, and Scotland, all while gaining valuable graphic design experience!

So, you’ve decided to take the leap and intern abroad. Congratulations! Surely you are excited and probably have a few worries too. One of the most common fears in going abroad is facing the dreaded language barrier.

You’ve done it. You completed your internship abroad. You took risks, met new people, learned new skills and impressed yourself with just how much you’ve grown.

Thought getting there was the hard part, right? Packing your bags, remembering your passport, and embarking on this massive adventure. While I applaud you for chasing your dream, you’re wrong. The hard part is just beginning. You have to go home. 

When you think of your child’s future career, what do you see? What profession are they in? Are they happy? Perhaps as a parent, the focus is too much on the long-term goal. As important, the focus should be - how can you advise and support your child to get there?

What do employers look for in an employee? In this question we are not considering the employee’s knowledge and training but the soft skills – the positive professional demeanor which a person might bring to a place of work.

Whether you’re in the beginning stages or the final stages of getting ready to intern abroad, at some point you’re going to want your parents support and input. Having done this for a while, we’re fully aware there are many different kinds of parents.
