Europe Internship | Traveling in Europe | Global Experiences

Kelly Holland

Many of our interns take advantage of their internship assignment in Europe and choose to travel on the weekends. Val Woods tells us about her experience in traveling and how to choose between all the awesome places, and do so affordably.

Being in Dublin for an internship this summer has been one of the best experiences of my life! I’ve learned so much in the short time that I’ve been working here, but I’m definitely not spending all of my time at my internship. In my downtime, I enjoy exploring the beautiful lands in Ireland and other countries in Europe.

One of my favorite excursions was going to Northern Ireland in the United Kingdom. This was a trip planned by the Global Experiences program coordinators in Dublin.

We were able to stop by the Dark Hedges, Dun Luce Castle, the Carrick-a-Rede rope bridge and Giants Causeway. Afterwards, we were able to spend some time in Belfast. It was a truly amazing trip, with views so amazing that words could never perfectly describe how beautiful it was.

Traveling in Europe once you’re already here becomes much easier than if you were overseas. The plane tickets to different European countries are much cheaper and it’s convenient and completely possible to take a trip out of the country for the weekend and be back at work on Monday! I have been able to see Venice, Italy and London, England so far.

One of my roommates, another GE intern, and I wanted to plan a trip out of the country and we had SO many ideas. We finally decided to put all of the cities we wanted to visit (ones that we knew we could travel in a weekend, and wouldn’t be too expensive) in a paper bag labeled "Mystery Europe trip.’’ We randomly pulled a slip out and the winner was Budapest, Hungary so we booked a plane ticket to there right after. When else am I going to get the opportunity to put some countries in a hat and travel to the random selection?

We are traveling to Hungary in one short week! And a few days after I’ll be heading to Spain. I just found a REALLY cheap plane ticket. Some great websites to find cheap plane tickets are kiwi.com, and edreams.com!

What I wanted was an amazing working experience, which GE has been able to provide but I also wanted freedom and possibilities of traveling while I was a young adult. Being in Ireland this summer has given me just that opportunity.

Happy travels, Val!
