So You're Going
Abroad...
|
Whether it's for a fun trip,
language training, an internship, or all of those things, going
abroad can be a lot to think about. This newsletter will give you a glance at
what you can expect from your experience.
|
| Expect Cultural Differences |
"Culture Shock" is not a bad
term. It is your mind's natural way of adapting to a new
environment, and is a necessary step in your personal and
professional development.
Culture Shock can spring
up while you're out and about town as well as while you are on the
job. Always remind yourself
that it is you who are in the position to change and adapt, not the
culture or environment around you.
For information on
the phases of culture shock please consult your pre-departure
materials or ask one of our Program
Coordinators.
Expect to encounter cultural differences
during your program.

Expect to Work
Hard
|
Global
Experiences' Customized International Internships are designed to
give you the career exposure you need to differentiate yourself in
the global marketplace. We know you'll enjoy the
programs, and there's no question that cities like Rome, Florence,
Sydney, Melbourne, Paris and London are an absolute blast, but in
order to get the most out of your experience, you will have to put
in some hard work.
Of course since you'll be interning
in a field that you love, it won't always feel like work, but
remember that just like anyone who starts a new job, you'll have to
cover the basics first. Take this time to learn how the
company works and how they fit into the marketplace. As you prove yourself to your bosses, you
will be able to tackle bigger tasks and integrate yourself better
into the company.
Check out our "About our Interns"
page to see how some of our past participants benefitted from their
hands-on work experience.

Expect the Unexpected
|
Our staff
loves to travel, and the one thing we agree on no matter where we go
is to expect the unexpected. With so many people
traveling and studying abroad, you never know who you'll run into,
what you'll see, and you never know
what opportunities will be presented. Maybe it's a good
meal, a fun weekend trip, or even a job -- you never know.
Before you leave for
your trip, you'll have certain preconceived notions of how the place
will feel, the people will act, and the food will taste. We
guarantee that the reality of where you are will be different than
you expected. Go with the
flow. The key is that you'll be growing as a person and
learning more about yourself and your world.

Expect to have FUN!
|
Activities and opportunities seem
boundless when you're abroad. Be sure to
check out local publications for events. Some websites like
www.whatsonwhen.com publish
annual events that you can research even before you leave.
Plan your social schedule around culturally significant
events and you'll gain much more from the experience than you
imagined.
Sure, you
won't have festivals passing through the streets everyday, but you
always have the opportunity to explore stores, museums, new sections
of the city or even new cities altogether!
Wherever your internship experience is
taking you, expect to have fun!
