                        Andrew
                        Hofstra University: School of Law
                        Florence

"I did a lot of things in my internship. I acted as unofficial translator and would help translate documents and conversations from Italian to English. I even got to settle a case over the phone with an English speaking client. I got to sit in on client meetings and my supervisors took me to check out scenes of controversies. At first, the internship was kind of challenging because in Italy they start you out really slowly before they give you any major responsibilities. I had to speak up to the supervisors about what I wanted and needed, and then everything drastically improved. I was given a ton of responsibilities and projects. I really loved the experience of this firm and the bonds I made with my colleagues. I like that I was able to do some networking so I can look into Italy for work in the future. I learned a lot and it really improved my Italian." Florence was amazing. I really want to go and improve my language skills, and I really was able to. I feel much more confidence in my fluency after completing this program. Everything outside the internship was fantastic ranging from the culture to the food. The entire group that I went with really made the experience great too. It wouldn't have been as much fun without them."

                        Alli
                        University of North Dakota
                        Washington, DC

So, I found out I would be spending my summer in Washington DC as a Global Experiences intern way back in September of 2012. Needless to say I was beyond thrilled and it was difficult waiting about ten months to finally leave! I couldn’t think of a better way to spend my summer, working for a cause I am passionate about, learning new skills, and taking hold of every opportunity I’m presented with. Initially I had no idea what to expect. I’m from small town, Minnesota and attend college at the University of North Dakota…not exactly “big city” life. But this has most definitely been a memorable experience! Adjusting to life in the city didn’t challenge me as much as I originally anticipated. After a few days the streets become easy to navigate and riding the Metro is a breeze (just know where you are going)! I must say, I do feel like a local at this point! Especially when people ask me for directions! So far one of my favorite things about DC is the city at night. I’ve always loved city lights at night and DC has met all expectations regarding that matter! As for my internship, it has been one of the most rewarding jobs I have had. It is a non-profit organization that advocates for youth involved in the juvenile justice system and those who are at risk of delinquency. We promote evidence-based practices that rehabilitate youth in the system and also prevent delinquent and risky behavior. I have a strong interest in psychology and criminal justice, and more recently I have been focusing on juvenile justice. I am thankful that I am able to apply my knowledge here. I have been lucky enough to attend countless briefings and work closely with other similar organizations.

“My internship was amazing. Words couldn't even begin to capture what a life changing experience it was. The legal experience was awesome, but the best part was by far growing up and maturing as an adult. It was such a great learning experience and it was just fantastic to be on my own away from constant emails, phone calls and texts and be able to just enjoy life. I met so many wonderful people and made some great long lasting connections. It may have cost me a bit in loans but it was worth every penny. I think about it every day and miss so many things about it. The experience definitely changed my life for the better! I should thank you profusely for suggesting I go [to Sydney]. The best thing I ever did was take your advice! So thank you for everything, it really made all the difference and impacted my life in such an indescribable and positive way!”

“The internship in Paris that Global Experiences provided me was excellent in every way. First, the application process was thorough in making sure that I would be placed in a situation where I could achieve my goals, and the subsequent pre-trip assistance was very helpful. The host family, where I was accommodated, was welcoming and inclusive, and the location of their apartment in the heart of the city made it easy to get around. The two-week language course, prior to the internship placement, enabled me to renew my command of the French language, as well as become accustomed to the Parisian accent. In addition, it was great during that time, to be able to get to know the other North American program participants, which led to later getting together on a regular basis to sightsee and to socialize. The provided cell phone helped us all keep in touch. Last but not least, the actual intern placement met all my expectations. Having completed my first year of law (in Canada, law is a post-graduate degree), I was anxious to gain experience working in a law firm and to do it in French (Canada is a bilingual country). All in all, it was a tremendous learning experience for me, living in Paris, immersing myself in the culture, and doing meaningful work in my chosen profession. Thank you Global Experiences.”

"As a legal intern, I was responsible for researching new legal issues as well as following up on old transactions. I managed communications between a Luxembourg Holding Company and its New York contacts regarding real property matters. I also had the opportunity [to] meet with clients and explain legal findings regarding my research. At times, I provided translations for clients who did not speak Italian. My assignments were always very interesting and challenging and with each new assignment, I learned more about international legal transactions. Choosing an internship with Global Experiences gave me more options within my legal career by providing me with the opportunity to gain valuable work experience in an international legal setting, and the ability to perfect my Italian language skills."
