Global Experiences has given me such a wealth of opportunity and practice that I know will last a lifetime. Not only do I feel more knowledgeable in the world of work, but interning abroad has now given me a great deal of strength and courage to go and pursue my life’s future goals.
Having recently returned from my year abroad, I feel as if I have comfortably adapted within the French and Spanish culture; switching back to the British mentality has somewhat been a reverse culture shock in itself! However, one month after being back, I can already feel the hard work paying off. Having worked with a marketing enterprise abroad, I am now interning with a PR and marketing company back home in London, of which I have been able to place many of the new skills I have learnt into practice (with regards to examining social media and its efficiency in online marketing).
One of the greatest lessons I will definitely take away with me from this year, is that you do not necessarily have to take up a placement which directly relates to your future career. Although it is true to say that I worked with an independent film company in Paris (the industry which I would like to enter), in Spain, I was mostly working in advertisement. However, in doing so, I embarked upon new challenges which I had not previously faced, acquired lifelong skills which I am already putting into practice everyday and finally I feel there is a greater sense of depth, understanding and maturity in everything I do. Not to mention, I have made lifelong friendships with people who have taken this journey with me as well as the French and Spanish natives, who have always given me the warm welcoming.
I am already looking forward to going back to visit next summer, so thank you Global Experiences for making this all possible!
Interning abroad really is the experience of a lifetime. Careful planning and preparation is vital but once you step over the threshold, you come to realise that home sweet home is really just around the corner.
