Field: Journalism
Location: Florence

Description: Kathleen worked for a local newspaper in Florence.

Tasks: Research, writing and publishing

Testimonial: Since my GE program in Florence I'm actually doing very well (and in no little part due to Global Experiences). When I came back to New York I started looking for work as a journalist and landed a place as a food writer at www.starchefs.com. It's an online culinary magazine for chefs and I know I got the job based on the portfolio I built in Italy. I'm also the magazine's Italian correspondent, so when the rare trip to Italy comes along, I'll be the one to attend. Keep your fingers crossed for me!

Name: Danni Rosner
Company: Singer Songwriter
Field: Journalism
Location: Florence

Description: It was December of 2006 - and I had 3 credits left to graduate. As you know - that's a pretty un-stressful last semester, and I wanted to do something different other than let my last months of college disappear into a muddy cascade of senior bar crawls and bitter- sweet long goodbyes. So I googled internships and came across a wide array of programs and companies - but one in particular caught my eye, Global Experiences study/work abroad. If you're the daughter of an attorney, you know that dad won't just go for anything - he needs a plan - one with direction and dedication. I knew that I wanted to go abroad, but I had to make it worth it. I grew up in Tokyo and we'd often go out of the country, take trips oversees - but all that pretty much stopped once we made the big move back to the States and I started high school...so I had a travel bug and it was time to get moving again. Based upon my English background, GE paired me with a tourist TV station that ran programs in both English and Italian. I went into my first interview with Sea Ten - initially interviewing to be helping with translation from English to Italian/Italian to English, but after a few days the boss man said "let's get you on the air!" And so...there I was, reporting in English and Italian on camera in the heart of Florence. . Check out this youtube video - one of the reports I did in Italian: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r_0TCcNVdxo&feature=related

Tasks: Reporting; presenting; journalism

Testimonial: "I picked my country, city and called up GE's office to get more information - I even went to visit their home office to meet the people i'd be dealing with. It wasn't easy convincing my father, but GE had the best of both worlds - a study abroad program where I'd learn the language and interviews for internships based upon my major and academic interests. He went for it, I went for it - even my alma mater, Virginia Tech - gave me 6 credits for the program."

Where are they now: And that brings me to where I am now - the host of a national music viedo tv show, and a singer/song writer on my second album release

Name: Christine W.
Company: UC Davis
Field: Business
Location: Sydney

Description: In 2008, I participated in Global Experiences’ International Internship program. The program provided me with the opportunity to visit a foreign country that has both a strong Business background and English as its native language. Since I was majoring in Business and did not speak any other language fluently, the opportunity was perfect. While in Sydney, I was able to work with Hotel Motel Association in the Central Business District. The program also arranged for my accommodation, which was a wonderful atmosphere to experience and within traveling distance to work.

Tasks: During my placement I created parts of a Human Resource Manual for the organizations members, researched current events to help keep staff members informed on Hospitality and Industrial Relations issues, worked on the newsletter and on operational tasks.

Testimonial: Overall, I found the program very rewarding. It gave me a unique opportunity to experience another culture from both a social and professional standpoint. Working in the city was a great opportunity for me as well as living in Sydney. I was able to see some great parts of Australia and meet many great people. The program takes you out of your comfort zone and allows you to develop skills that will benefit you in future endeavors when you return home. I would recommend going abroad to any student currently considering the option.
